Samuel Hervey Laughlin diary, 1845-1847.

The collection consists of a 553 pp. manuscript volume of a diary by Samuel Hervey Laughlin "A Diary of a Journey from Washington City to Tennessee, by way of Richmond, Lynchburg, and Abingdon, Va. and of events at Washington City, and Various Journeys, visits, travels, and Notes of Public men and affairs, from October 4th 1845 to Dec. 31, 1847." In it Laughlin discusses national and Tennessee politics and social activities, slavery, family relationships, religion, and health paractices; journeys between his home and Washington, D.C., cities on route, and New York City; his relationship with President Polk; his son Samuel Houston Laughlin's enlistment in the army for the Mexican War and his charge, Felix Grundy's admission to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.
